The 6011 rods are manufactured for operation under direct currents while 7018 rods can be run under direct or alternating currents.

More of a drag rod the 7018 is also referred to as a low hydrogen or low high rod in the field. Almost identical in mechanical properties but they are designed to run on a c as well as dc welding current. For this reason these rods are used extensively in structural welding. All except the 6010 can be used with ac and dc currents.

The flux contains almost no hydrogen and the rod produces smooth strong welds that are very ductile. In that sense the 6010 welding rod is slightly more specialized as it requires specific tools and a higher level of skill to use. Multiple pass welds with in the pipe welding industry are very commonplace. 6011 electrodes can also be used for all position welding using an alternating current ac welding power source.
